Background

Take a quick search on Amazon and you’ll find several SnapSafe Lock Boxes under the SnapSafe brand: Ruger Brand and Treklite brand. While they dress some up with some extra plastic ridges and differentiate between a key lock and a combination lock, they all have the same fatal flaws and I’m appalled that anyone would secure their handgun to such a piece of shit product.

The Problem

There is no excuse to put a simple wafer key lock on any safe as it can be opened in about 3 seconds with literally anything, a coffee stirrer, a flathead screwdriver, even a piece of tape folded over. In fact, if I just throw it on the ground on the right angle, it will open on its own. Yes, you read that right, you can open any SnapSafe Key locking handgun safe with a piece of tape or just throwing it on the ground in under 3 seconds.

Check out the two videos on this website for a full analysis of the product and you can actually see the guy open it with a piece of tape. What’s even more appalling in this fiasco is the product is CA DOJ Approved. How SnapSafe was able to swindle that rating onto their products is pretty unbelievable. To think these safes are supposed to protect children from unauthorized access is just flat out embarrassing.

The Better Alternative

Saving $20 to $30 could be the biggest regret of your life if your child was able to get access to your handgun. For an extra $20 more you can get a Hornady Key Locking Safe that is significantly more robust and uses a tubular lock at the $45 range. While I would always suggest a more secure option, I would highly recommend at least picking this safe over the SnapSafe Lockboxes. Take a look at the Hornady Key Locking Safe here.
