In this review, I’m going to explain exactly why the Rhino RBX6028 Gun Safe is the best Made in USA entry level gun safes in the industry.
Lock – Rhino RBX6028 Gun Safe
First and always most important for any gun safe is the lock. Rhino Metals uses the SecuRam UL Rated BackLit high security electronic lock. SecuRam is a long standing and very reliable brand and one of the three major lock companies I recommend with the other two being NL and S&G. The BackLit keypad is a huge upgrade from the TopLit because it is full stainless steel construction compared to the ABS plastic. This makes the keypad significantly more durable and long lasting.
They also vastly improved the way the 9 volt battery goes in and out by utilizing an interlocking plastic tray. Now you don’t have to slide the entire keypad up to change the battery, it’s a way better design. This lock features a 6 digit electronic code that is easy to program to your own custom combination. The lock opens 10,000+ times on just one battery.
Security – Rhino RBX6028 Gun Safe
The Rhino RBX6028 Gun Safe is more than adequate when it comes to security. It’s tested and approved by CA DOJ as a Firearm Safety Device. This is the standard burglary rating for entry level gun safes and it competes with the Liberty Centurion series and Stealth Essential series. New for 2023, Rhino is introducing their revolutionary SafeX system on these models which completely changes the way the locking bolts secure the safe door. It becomes significantly more pry resistant by interlocking the door to the body without the need for bolts.
It has a 14 gauge steel body and a 14 gauge steel composite door which is also in line with its competitors. Finally, the lock is protected by an internal ball bearing drill plate and internal re-locker.
Fire Rating – Rhino RBX6028 Gun Safe
Rhino didn’t stop at just a great quality lock and security features. They also added 40 minutes of fire protection at 1400 degrees. To accomplish this fire rating they added layers of 5/8″ fireboard in the ceiling, walls, floor and door. Also included is a genuine Palusol fire seal. It expands to 7 times its size during a fire to keep smoke and heat out.
While this fire rating is not verified by ETL, an independent laboratory, Rhino safes have successfully survived many fires. Ultimately, I’d say the proof is in the pudding.
Style and Function
The RBX Series is available in either standard textured black or with an American flag on the door. Hardware includes a flat black L-shaped drop down handle and chrome keypad.
Once inside the safe, the interior features a split gun rack with adjustable side shelving and an adjustable top shelf. The back of the door features a door panel organizer loaded with pistol holsters perfect for storing handguns.
