Kodiak is a brand owned by Rhino Metals that they use to designate their imported products. This gun safe is made in China but is so much better than the standard imported Chinese quality. With features like a UL Rated High Security electronic lock, heavy steel construction, impressive Ironworks styling and the all new revolutionary SafeX locking system, the Kodiak KBX5940 is now my top recommendation for an entry level gun safe.
Lock – KODIAK KSX5928 GUN SAFE
First and always most important for any safe is its lock. The Kodiak KSX5928 Gun Safe comes standard with the SecuRam Toplit high security electronic lock. This lock is tested and approved by underwriters laboratories, UL, which is an independent testing agency. They verify the security and reliability of locks and safes.
Nearly every entry level safe uses an unrated electronic Solenoid lock that is to easy to break into. This is an extremely high quality lock on an entry level safe. The lock is also protected by both a hardened steel hard plate just inside the door that absolutely destroys drill bits. In addition, an internal re-locker that fires if a thief is attempting to punch the lock through.
Security – KODIAK KSX5928 GUN SAFE
The steel thickness on the Kodiak KSX5928 Gun Safe is listed at 2.75 mm which is equivalent to 12 gauge steel. It easily passed the UL Approved RSC burglary test. In addition, it exceeds the requirements to be qualified as a CA DOJ Approved gun safe.
New for 2023, Rhino has introduced their revolutionary SafeX system on these models which completely changes the way the locking bolts secure the safe door. It becomes significantly more pry resistant by interlocking the door to the body without the need for bolts. Fire Rating – KODIAK KSX5928 GUN SAFE
The Kodiak KSX5928 Gun Safe comes with a 60 minute fire rating at 1400 degrees. This is triple the time needed to survive the length of the standard house fire that burns for 20 minutes. The door is fully lined with an intumescent door seal that expands to multiple times its size during a fire to keep smoke and heat from entering the safe.
Style and Function
What really sets apart the Kodiak KSX5928 Gun Safe is its impressive Ironworks styling. It’s designed after the made in USA Thunderbolt and AIW series but the low cost version. It still has the rivets and corner protectors in addition to the antique paint styling. Overall it is very cool and the perfect safe for the man cave. The interior is fully lined with carpeting on a split gun rack with adjustable and removable side shelves and top shelves.
The back of the door features a handy door panel organizer that includes pistol holsters. One really great feature about their shelves is that they include a cut-out in the back of the shelf that leaves room for your extra long firearms. Lastly, the factory installed USB electrical outlet is included for powering electronics inside the safe.
The Bottom Line
Would I buy the Kodiak KSX5928 Gun Safe to store my valuables and firearms. Yes, I absolutely would and highly recommend it. Not only does it have the coolest styling in the industry but also a UL RSC burglary rating, UL approved high security lock, 1 hour fire, impressive styling and the revolutionary SafeX locking system. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better safe with all of these features.
