It uses the traditional 3 number combination on a spy-proof dial that prevents others from seeing you spin the combination.

UL Approved Type 1 Electronic Lock – S&G

There is also a second lock option that is the S&G electronic lock. This is an excellent quality lock made by the oldest lock company in the United States. UL Approved type 1 is the highest security rating available and I highly recommend this lock.

This lock features a 6 digit electronic code that is easy to program to your own custom combination. In addition, the lock opens 10,000+ times on just one battery. Finally, there are over 1 million possible combinations.

If all that is not enough, S&G’s high-security electronic locks are proven to withstand military-level EMP attacks. S&G tested this lock using the U.S. military’s highest EMP impact standard. An independent lab applied a radiant transient electromagnetic field on this keypad following the Military Standard MIL-STD461F, Method RS105 at 50 kV/m peak exposure. At the end of the testing series the S&G locks were still fully functional.

Hard Plate and Re-Locker

Protecting either lock option is both a hard plate and internal re-locker. The Hard plate is a piece of hardened steel that absolutely destroys drill bits. The internal re-locker fires if the lock is punched through securing the bolts in place. Fort Knox uses a ball bearing hard plate which is better than the traditional hardened steel because it causes the drill bit to slip off of the round balls. When it comes to security the Fort Knox Legend 7251 gun safe begins far beyond where most gun safes end. It features a 3/8″ steel door in addition to a 1/4″ steel body and a 10 gauge steel inner liner. Securing the door are twenty-six 1-1/2″ solid steel locking bolts covering all four sides that extend deep into the safes body. Unique to Fort Knox are their corner bolts which also extend to all four corners. Prying the door is open is quite literally impossible.

All of this security earned the Legend series the UL RSC burglary rating. These requirements ensure the safe can withstand an attack on the door with multiple different tools for a minimum of 5 minutes each. If the standard security on this safe is not enough for you, you can also add up to four additional 10 gauge steel liners, a stainless steel liner or an Armaknox AR500 liner.

Fire Rating – Fort Knox Legend 7251 Gun Safe

Another advanced feature of Fort Knox Gun Safes is the Inferno Shield fire protection. Fort Knox limits the thermal conductivity by lining the inside of their vaults with a proprietary blend of a hydrogen bond fireboard and lock it in place using a stud weld process. They also test this process with a full 9 sensor house simulated test and show you the exact details in the graph below. Others just can’t match up.

The Legend series is fire rated for 90 minutes at 1680 degrees. The temperature used in the test is significantly hotter than competitors who only test their safes at 1200 or 1400 degrees. So if it was an apples to apples comparison, the Fort Knox Legend gun safes would likely last 120 minutes or more. Finally, Fort Knox includes a dual activated thermal door seal. First the cold smoke seal and then the Palusol seal that swells to keep the door shut. Construction matters to Fort Knox and should to you as well.
