They make real safes, not the illusion of security now so common in Costco, Wal-mart and Tractor Supply. They took a lot of the higher security features found in their gun safes and used them in this pistol safe. In this review, I’m going to help you understand why the American Security PS1208EZ Handgun Safe is one of the absolute best mechanical pistol safes in the industry.

Lock – American Security PS1208EZ Handgun Safe

First and always most important is the lock. American Security uses the genuine Simplex mechanical push button lock with 1,081 different possible combinations. When installed and used correctly, this is a very reliable lock designed to last forever.

Punch Attack Solution

A few years ago, it was exposed that anyone could easily break into this style of handgun safe with a screwdriver and a hammer, however that was never the case with this pistol safe. From the start, American Security added a steel housing underneath the lock to prevent a punch attack. This company is always one step ahead and actually cares about your security.

This handgun safe is built above standard handgun safe construction. It uses a 14 gauge steel door with a lid that overlaps a 14 gauge steel body. This offers adequate pry resistance and is much thicker than the standard 16 gauge steel options from nearly every other manufacturer. It has also been tested for and is approved as a firearm safety device by California Department of Justice. This ensures it meets basic security requirements and is authorized for the use of storing a firearm in California.

On the hinge side, a steel dead bar bolts the hinge together and two very large steel hooks lock underneath the bar providing even more pry resistance. There are also four bolt down holes for mounting the safe to a fixed surface.

Style and Function

The American Security pistol safes are finished in a charcoal gray that really looks more like blue. I’m not crazy about the color and really not sure why they went with it. However from a functionality stand point, they did very good with this handgun safe. It includes three layers of foam, one is pluck foam, one is egg crate and the top layer is a solid piece. The pluck foam can be picked to fit the size of your handgun and the top layer of foam compresses it so that it doesn’t slide around if you choose to carry it. To carry it, a very convenient chrome carry handle is included. Finally, a gas strut is included to help assist in lifting the heavy door and keep it up until you are ready to close the safe.

All American Security handgun safes come with a 1 year parts and labor warranty. American Security is a very easy company to work with. They are trustworthy when it comes to providing service on their products. They are the oldest safe company in the United States with a premier reputation for quality. This is a warranty you can trust.

The Bottom Line

Would I buy the American Security PS1208EZ Handgun Safe to store my pistols? Yes, I absolutely would. It’s a reliable product with a high quality Simplex mechanical lock encased in a protective steel housing with adequate steel construction and a reliable warranty.

However, it’s not my top pick for a handgun safe and I recommend two handgun safes instead of this one. The first is the Stealth ShadowVault which uses a UL rated high security S&G electronic lock. The second is the V-Line Brute XD which is nearly identical to this safe but Made in USA.
