Vaultek has been making premium handgun safes for around 6 years now. They are the fastest growing safe company and have an incredible presence on Instagram, Youtube and are backed by nearly every influencer in the gun community. Normally, I would look at that as a red flag and only do to a large marketing budget but tons of these partnerships aren’t even paid, people just really like their products. They have now added to their impressive lineup and started to modular, portable plastic lock boxes. This is one of those products where I really don’t understand the application or need and am left with what were they thinking? In this review, I’ll go over why I think the Vaultek LifePod XT1i Biometric Portable Lockbox is grossly overpriced and completely unnecessary.
Lock – Vaultek LifePod XT1i Biometric Portable Lockbox
First and always most important for any safe is its lock and the Vaultek LifePod XT1i Biometric Portable Lockbox uses a large combination of entry methods including a weatherproof HD biometric fingerprint scanner, 4-8 digit backlit LED keypad electronic lock with key override. The buttons on the keypad are weatherproof and easy to use with a feel that provides feedback. There are over 19 million possible keypad combinations and a proximity sensor illuminates the keypad in low light situations.
The lock is powered by an internal 9 Volt Battery and a micro-USB port is included to get the lockbox open if the battery dies. Finally, the key override is usually a feature I despise but Vaultek uses a very high security laser engraved key that I approve of. Finally, these laser cut keys are pick proof and even lock pickers like LockPickingLawyer on Youtube approve of them.
Security – Vaultek LifePod XT1i Biometric Portable Lockbox
The Vaultek LifePod XT1i Biometric Portable Lockbox is constructed of a lightweight and rugged T3 Polymer. This is really just a fancy word for plastic but considering plastic and metal take the same amount of time and tools to open, it actually does make sense to use it in this kind of portable application. It also includes additional anti-theft features like a reinforced steel interior hinge system, dual anti-impact latches and a steel security cable mount. The side compression latches and inner rubber gasket seal off the interior from environmental elements making it weather resistant, dust-proof, able to float and fully TSA complaint for air travel.
Style and Function
The Vaultek cases comes in a few different color options like black and olive drab. The interior is fully modular with re-positionable pistol racks, pluck foam, padded divider system, interior molle lid, EDC tray and magazine racks. Most accessory options cost extra and are not included. It includes an interior LED light that illuminates the interior during every open.
The Bottom Line
Would I buy the Vaultek LifePod XT1i Biometric Portable Lockbox to transport my handguns? I would consider it if it were around $100 but for the current price of $449, I honestly can’t wrap my head around who would buy this. A plastic case with a fancy biometric scanner feels completely unnecessary to me and I just don’t understand where Vaultek felt there was a need for this in the market.
I’m assuming, they ran out of handgun safe and rifle safe ideas and though maybe a $400+ plastic case is needed. I imagine this products sales are extremely low and it will soon be discontinued. It’s not that it’s a bad quality product, it is just grossly overpriced for what it is and doesn’t fit any need in my opinion.
