“Popped open with a screwdriver in seconds.”

Alek from Amazon.com

I subjected it to three tests in succession: screwdriver, household hammer, and 12-inch crowbar. I took video of this, and will be updating my amazon review as promised.

The results of the test were as follows:
1. The screwdriver failed to pop open the lock, despite repeated attempts and much force. However, the screwdriver was able to bend the steel of the lid enough to comfortably fit my fingers, at which point I physically bent the lid of the safe open. I am not especially physically strong, so the fact that I was able to effectively bend the sheet metal in half represents a complete failure on the part of this product. Time to open: about 90 seconds.
2. The household hammer, when striking the un-bent part of the lid, quickly caved it in and popped the lock open. Time to open: 10 seconds. This is the sort of attack I would most fear from an angered houseguest, determined teenager, or burglar.
3. Due to the extent of damage caused by the first two tests, the 12-inch crowbar test was difficult to perform fairly. Nonetheless, I fit the crowbar under the lid by the lock and pried. The metal loop attached to the lid snapped off in the lock, separating itself from the lid at its attachment points.

In summary: the upgraded aluminum lock mechanism is a vast improvement over the previous plastic lock, but the ‘safe’ is little more secure than before. The weak sheet-steel construction failed in seconds when subject to the sort of household-level tools and attack one would expect from an angry family member, friend, guest, or burglar. This product remains a danger to those who rely on it to keep their firearms and valuables safe.

You have fixed the weakest point of failure by upgrading your lock. You must now upgrade the material and geometry (add U-channels perhaps, etc.) used to construct the safe and the method by which you attach the lock to the lid.”

The ONNAIS Gun Safe – Biometric Gun Safe for Pistols is anything but a “gun safe”. Amazon has become littered with hordes of Chinese manufacturers peddling their crap steel boxes and giving unknowing customers an illusion of security that is actually more of a risk than they may realize. You buy a pistol for home safety and quickly realize you need to protect it from those you are trying to protect. Handguns have no business just lying around when kids are in the home and everyone should invest in a high quality handgun safe if you decide to keep guns in the house. But, just as you spent time researching the best handgun, it’s equally important to research the best handgun safe to keep it protected. Unfortunately, the ONNAIS gun safe is currently the best seller on Amazon in the category and it truly is a shame for those who genuinely want a quality product.

Let’s start with the first giant red flag for this ONNAIS Gun Safe which is that they don’t even list the steel thickness. Steel thickness is the most important feature of a gun safe and when it’s not listed, we quickly know that it’s guilt as thin as humanly possible. Based on the weight of the safe, it’s definitely 16 gauge steel which is paper thin and as Alek reported above, can easily be popped open with a screwdriver in seconds. The whole point of a handgun safe is so that it can not be opened with tools easily found around the house and this one can easily be opened with less than tools.

Next, many buyers have reported that once you replace the batteries, the biometric finger scanner completely loses all memory of your fingerprints. This is a disaster and a nightmare for someone who isn’t aware or tests the safe after replacing the batteries. This safe sits in a default mode that will open on anyones fingerprint until the first fingerprint is programmed and if you were unaware of this and just tried your finger after replacing the battery, it would still open, but it would also then open on your kids fingerprints or a thief.

There are also tons of different access points into this ONNAIS gun safe that are completely unsafe. The design of the lid allows it to be pried open and you can insert something inside to trigger the reset button. The key override can be opened with literally anything including a coffee stirrer and the plastic moldings around the keypad and sides can be removed, providing additional access holes to trigger the reset button.

All in all, the ONNAIS Gun safe is a complete disaster and should not be allowed to even be sold for the purpose of storing a firearm in your home. I would highly advise you stay far away from this safe and trust a handgun safe from a reputable American Company such as American Security, Fort Knox or Stealth.
